Common Safari Problems and How to Remedy Them

Apple invests a lot of time and effort into optimizing and improving Safari for Mac users. The efforts show that the web browser consumes less battery than Firefox and Chrome, loads websites quickly, and seamlessly syncs data with the iPad and iPhone. Despite Safari being a powerful and popular browser, it is not without issues. Here, take a walk through some of the common Safari problems.

1. Connection is not private error

The Internet is an incredible place. It is a treasure trove of information, simplifies shopping, and allows people to stay connected, no matter which part of the globe you are in. However, cybercriminals are never resting, and hence, security is always a huge concern when you’re surfing the web.

People unwittingly visit websites that steal their information and provide it to hackers. In recent years, popular browsers like Safari have started informing people when the website is unreliable and cannot be trusted, especially websites not using the HTTPS protocol. That’s what the error ‘your connection is not private on Mac’ is all about.

If you see the error flashing across your screen, it is best to avoid visiting such websites. However, if you need to, there are a few workarounds.

  • Reload the webpage because sometimes the error is caused due to a server time-out.
  • Go incognito mode to open the browser.

2. Safari has frozen, crashed, or failed to open

  • Force quit

Force Quit Safari if it has suddenly frozen and not working at all. On your Mac, go to the Apple menu > choose Force Quit. Or, you can press Command + Option + Escape.

Wait for a few seconds to relaunch the browser. If the problem isn’t resolved, move to the next fix.

  • Restart your system

Restarting typically takes care of all sorts of problems that crop up in third-party and native programs. Give it a go, and the Safari issues should resolve themselves.

  • Safari update

Updating Safari is the best way to prevent software-related bugs from causing issues. Since Safari is Mac’s stock browser and integrated into the macOS, updating the OS will automatically update Safari.

Go to the Apple menu > choose System Preferences > click Software Update.

  • Remove browser cache

Safari might not function properly because of an overload of the outdated browser cache. Clear it by opening Safari > selecting the Preferences option > clicking the Advanced tab and checking the box next to Show Develop Menu in menu bar > click on Empty Caches. Then, relaunch the browser.

  • Deactivate extensions

Undoubtedly, your Safari browsing experience can be augmented by extensions. But if the extensions are outdated and unoptimized, it can cause random crashes, or the browser may freeze.

Disable all the extensions and see if Safari runs smoothly. If so, you’ll know the culprit is the extensions.

Choose Safari > click on Safari Extensions and uncheck the boxes to disable them on the menu bar.

  • Open in safe mode

If you fail to open Safari and cannot disable the extensions or clear browser cache, you need to boot your Mac in Safe Mode. Switch off your system and wait for ten seconds before switching it on. Hold down the Shift keys while turning on your Mac.

In certain cases, entering and exiting Safe Mode is enough to solve Safari problems.

3. Safari is lagging

  • Close the extra tabs

If you have a dozen websites open, it is obvious that Safari will struggle to perform under such an immense workload. Certain websites consume more resources than others, and therefore, having so many tabs open at once can bring down Safari’s performance.

Close all the extra tabs that you don’t need and release some pressure. Safari should speed up.

  • Deactivate search suggestions

Switching off search suggestions is one of the quickest methods of speeding up the Safari browser. Go to Safari > select Preferences > click Search and uncheck the Include Search Engine Suggestions box.

  • Test the add-ons and plugins

Safari might be running slow because of hidden plugins and add-ons. So, go to Safari and click Preferences > select the Websites tab and click on Plugins. Disable the plugins for specific websites, or you can remove them altogether by going to Finder > clicking on Go to Folder and entering /Library/Internet Plug-Ins. Move to trash all the active plugins.

An enjoyable Internet surfing experience depends not only on your Internet speed and Mac but also on the web browser. If Safari has been causing issues, these fixes mentioned above should help you solve the problems instantly and carry on with your tasks. Best of luck!
